To tell you the truth, this is a mediocre kit at best. It seems Trumpeter copied the O'Brien as it is in it's present day configuration in San Francisco. The O'Brien was modernized and refitted in '47 or so. So what we have here is not the O'Brien as it was in WWII. Tons of detail has been left out. The kit screams for railings so buy a PE detail set. I bought Tom's Modelworks detail PE set from Great Models along with this kit, but the brass is too thin and a pain to work with, so I chucked it and got the Eduard PE set which is much much better brass wise and easier to work with. For resin gun tubs etc (the kit ones are wrong!) I searched out the French L'Arsenal detail set. It costs more than the kit but is WELL WORTH IT, even if the instructions are poor unlike the Eduard set. To make this O'Brien WWII authentic, be prepared to spend some bucks on a PE set and some resin because this kit is only a loose representation of a liberty ship. You will also have to do some scratch building. However, with time and care and research you can make it into a beauty. If you want something that resembles a Liberty Ship, go for the kit alone. My late father in law served on WWII Liberty ships as a Captain /Navigator and was a docent on the restored O'Brien in SF for over 15 years, so I know this ship inside and out.
